A Lucas O’Riley Mystery
By Nataleah J. Akin
London 1920
My good friend Lucas O’Riley called upon me one winter day. When I found him in his study deep in thought I was almost afraid to say anything. I didn’t want to ruin his thinking so I stood silently for a moment then I said “Sir you wished to see me?” He jumped from his chair and said “Good God Bailey must you call me sir I am not your sir we are both men of equal age so I shall not be called sir”. I wanted to tell him that he was three years my age but the decided not to. Then I asked him why he had called upon me. He said he had been thinking and decided to give up working for Mr.Quinky and become a detective. That was what he wished to do more than anything else fallow in the footsteps of his idol Detective Sherlock Holmes. Needless to say he was a good one. Then he after he had told me what he had been thinking he asked if I would join him. I too was working for Quinkly so I agreed
The next day we went in to Mr. Quinkly’s office and said we would like to quit. After much screaming and shouting on his part he finally reluctantly agreed to let us go under 1 condition we had to help him when he needed it, and to this Lucas said “Well we can help you under mysterious circumstances stance but not financially”. Quinkly thought and said “Fine you have my blessing”.’
Though the next few days were calm we had been advertising in the local paper London News for a week when a short stout man knocked on our door. He said he had seen our ad in the paper and thought we could help him we invited him in to the parlor and gave him some tea. Lucas asked him to tell us his story. He said gladly and He started “I was wandering the museum I work at just like I do every day as I crossed through the Dinosaur exhibit I saw a tour being lead by our newest employee whom I hired” he said this as if he was proud of his accomplishment. He continued “I stopped at the T-Rex exhibit it had always fascinated me I was reading when I heard someone say “James Baker” I turned to see a tall heavy man with a familiar face he said “ I have been sent by a private name to give you this” He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small box wrapped in green, Scrolled at the top in cursive James Baker 492 43rd street London I looked up and was about to ask him how he knew my name or my address but he cut me off he said “Open this when you are alone in your office in your car your home any were as long as you are alone” then he walked away looked me in the eyes and walked a way I went into the lecture room and sat down far away from the door my boss and I have the only 2 keys to this room and I was sure I locked it” and to this I cut in I told him that “fear makes one think 1 thing happened when something entirely different actually happened” He rose as if to leave Lucas said wait sir please don’t leave He looked at Lucas and said “ARE YOU CRAZY EVERYONE ELSE IN LONDON THINKS I AM CRAZY!!!!!!” James walked over to jacket and pulled out a bullet and a note and sat back down. I said “sir if you would continue” he started again “I had just opened the box I was reading the note over and over again when I heard someone say will you help my kids I turned to see the same man with tears in his eyes then it hit my “Baxter” I said the man before me almost to tears was the same bully who had threatened me into teaching him chemistry and math was know before my crying for me to help his kids. I agreed to help the children not him he said” Fine just make them better please they are all I have if I didn’t have them I would be a hermit out in Germany all I want is for them to get better I will pay you whatever you ask just please” Then he broke in to sobs. I said what happened he said he would be in touch I haven’t spoken to him since” Lucas asked “May I see the bullet he looked it over and said a silver bullet with “God rest his soul” engraved on it. It was a M1911 custom sliver engraved bullet that means this is the only one. “But M1911 was a war pistol?” I said “Exactly Bailey exactly” he told Mr. Baker that we would contact him as soon as we found a lead he was staying at the St Marisa For 2 weeks on badness Lucas said “we may be done by the you know” James baker left Lucas sat down a stared at the roof for 2 hours before calling me from my room to see him just as I walked he told me to contact Mr. Baker.I objected and said”we have had the cae for 2 hrs Lucas he will think we are clowns a fire us if we contact him now”

I think you have a good story going there. BUT you need to proof read it and put in some punctuation marks. :) It will make it easier to read.
ReplyDeleteLove you Grandma
You have a very GOOD story. Did you do this ALL by yourself. You might want to check some spelling and punctuation marks. Otherwise it is very well done.
